Dr. Kopelman is a leading expert in the state of Iowa in the fields of Women’s maternal/Perinatal Mental Health. Dr. Kopelman was the founding psychiatrist and Co-Director for the Women’s Wellness and Counseling Service at the University of Iowa Hospitals &Clinics, providing care to women in eastern Iowa for over a decade. During that time, she was a researcher in perinatal mental health services and advisor to the Iowa Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Maternal, Child, & Family Health. She then went on to provide women’s mental health services via telemedicine to northwest Iowa women and mothers for several years before establishing her women’s mental health-focused private practice at Meadowlark. She is a published author and has presented nationally and internationally on maternal mental health services.
She is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at The University of Iowa College of Medicine and continues to educate residents and clinicians statewide on women’s mental health and perinatal treatment.Dr. Kopelman’s background and training in the interface of psychiatry with other medical specialties, primarily obstetrics-gynecology, informs her approach to comprehensive, individualized, evidence-based treatment planning for women across the adult reproductive lifespan.
She is passionate about working with women to optimize and streamline treatment regimens that address their unique preferences and personal life circumstances, in the context of potentially complex medical needs. Her expertise includes helping patients make informed decisions about medication use related to pregnancy and breastfeeding, reproductive hormone status, or other medical conditions. She blends a collaborative and thoughtful risk-benefit analysis with a supportive, interpersonal therapeutic approach and includes complimentary treatments. She loves to support the evidence-based benefits of physical activity and will be offering active visits for interested women.
A lifelong resident of Iowa, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts with honors in Biology from Grinnell College (’95) and completed her Doctor of Medicine (M.D. ‘99), psychiatric residency training (’03), and Master of Public Health (M.P.H. ‘05) at the University of Iowa. Dr. Kopelman is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Adult Psychiatry. She is a longstanding member of Postpartum Support International (PSI), the International Marcé Society for Perinatal Mental Health, and Marcé of North America.
She lives in Iowa City with her husband, raising their four children, one dog, and an impressive number of cats. When not working or parenting, running with friends and family is where you’ll find her, including as co-leader of the Iowa City Trail Sisters and as a pacer for various Iowa-based long distances races.
